What is VenaSeal™?

The VenaSeal™ Closure System uses an advanced medical adhesive to close and seal varicose veins. VenaSeal™ treatment minimizes patient discomfort and reduces recovery time, making it a good choice for many people.

It's the only procedure approved for use in the United States that doesn't use heat, tumescent local anesthesia, or a sclerosant. Instead, VenaSeal™ uses a medical-grade "glue" to shut down diseased veins.

The VenaSeal™ Closure System treats venous reflux disease in your legs. This condition commonly affects the superficial venous system and is often the underlying cause of troublesome varicose veins.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are most likely to develop on your legs, often from middle age onward, although they can affect people of any age. They're raised, swollen blood vessels that develop when excess blood gathers in parts of the vein.

As they progress, varicose veins can cause symptoms such as:

  • Itching
  • Fatigue
  • Burning
  • Leg pain
  • Tingling
  • Heaviness
  • Soreness
  • Throbbing
  • Cramping
  • Night cramps
  • Restless legs
  • Swollen legs
  • Discoloration of the skin around the veins

Without treatment, varicose veins can trigger the development of venous ulcers — open wounds that are resistant to healing and may cause serious infections.

How does VenaSeal™ work?

Your provider at Florida Lakes Vein Center fills a syringe with the VenaSeal™ adhesive and inserts it into the VenaSeal™ dispensing gun, which attaches to a catheter. They then insert the catheter (a tiny hollow tube) into the varicose vein using ultrasound guidance.

The catheter reaches specific areas along the varicose vein, where your provider conducts a series of trigger pulls that deliver the VenaSeal™. They also apply compression to your leg during the procedure to help the adhesive stick properly.

Closing the diseased veins with VenaSeal™ means blood has to reroute through nearby veins. This improves circulation and relieves most symptoms of varicose veins.

What happens after the VenaSeal™ procedure?

After the procedure, your provider at Florida Lakes Vein Center applies a small bandage over the access site. You can quickly return to normal activities following VenaSeal™ treatment, so it's a convenient option.

Side effects are uncommon with VenaSeal™. You might experience some burning or tingling in the treated area, but this should soon pass.
